Default Getting interested in fly rods again.

Anybody use a fly rod (with fly line) to fish for Crappie? I have caught some Bream lately and really can relate to my childhood on the bank of a pond. I am enjoying it some now and think it will be a lot of fun when they are on the banks. Just reflecting and experimenting a little in the slow days of Summer. Have a great weekend!

I'm not a real hand at it but several folks have told me to start with real light jigs, under 1/32, to start with and you'll begin to pick up different ideas. Keep us posted.

There is a fly fishing board here at crappie.com. Check it out!

I would start out with a fly that is weightless. Weighted flies (or jigs) are actually more difficult to cast. They're certainly not pleasant to cast.

Stop before the addiction sets in! I have a mess of bead chain eyed Clouser minnows that are my crappie fly of choice, along with a little fly I came up with.
    Clouser minnows, size 4-8
    Slumpbusters size 8
Furled tail mohair leeches size 10-12

I fish with a fly rod 95% of the time, and wouldn't have it any other way!

Default What weight and length rod are you using?

I'm using something I already have and it's 7'6" 5wt. I think this is going to be a lot of fun for me. I am thinking of getting another 8"6" 4wt.

I pulled out my fly rod a few weeks ago. Had not used it in close to 10 years. Sure did feel good, about like riding a bike as it all comes back you. Never have crappie fished with it but that will change sometime this year. My rod is set up for bream but I'm sure with a new leader it will be fine for crappie. Good luck fishing with yours.

Chuck, I have a 9-ft 5-weight, 7-ft 3-weight, and just recently bought a 5-ft 2-weight. They have all caught crappie! It all depends where I'm at as to what I will use.
