Smile If you've been wondering where I've been!

I haven't been on the site in quite a while and you may have been wondering where I've been if you're curious about it. Well,...two reasons,...1. I needed a break anyway and I have been doing some fishing between rainy periods,...and 2. I have taken an interest in amateur radio and I am in process
of studying for my entry level "Technician Class" license. I have been visiting ham radio related sites as well. I have always had interest in this kind of thing and it looks as though I may be able to finally do it. After earning my license,my plan is to start out on a 5 to 10 watt handy-talkie type radio that covers at least two bands(2m and 440mhz). I can take that handy talkie out on the boat with me and that would serve as my mobile unit. I also plan on having a base station unit in my apartment in addition to having the mobile handy-talkie radio. Think about it,...two hobbies tied into one,...combine my fishing with amateur radio. Since I don't ice fish,my winter time recreation will be spent on the ham radio. As for radio gear,I am looking at a Yaesu FT-897D radio as a base unit and a Yaesu FT-270R handheld radio as my mobile unit.

I see a lot of guys that display there numbers on their license plates, around here. They use them a lot for weather spotters around here also. EB

I think you'll find getting your ticket a lot easier that it use to be, and now with no code. You'll find it another great hobby and you'll get a lot of enjoyment with it also. With the HT and if you're close to a 2 meter repeater, your coverage will really be great. I've had my ticket since 1961 and have worked most all modes since then, but my biggest enjoyment was working ATV and my design of the Rib Cage Slot Antenna some years ago that is still used on ATV repeaters today.

We use our HT a lot when we camp and fish in the Santee Cooper swamp in the winter time. Let us know when you get that call.
