Follow the bait and don't be afraid to look on the bottom in an area that does not have a thermocline. Big crappie hang out in the open as often as they are tight to structure or cover. The fish on the bottom are holding tight to structure.
I know spring and fall are the times to look for Big Crappie shallow. But where do they go when the water temp. is in the 70's and 80's?? All the crappie fisherman on my lake disappear with the fish. The big fish have to eat.

They're hiding and laughing at the folks that can't find them!:D
My fish are suspended over deep water and structure, and so are yours probably. That's why people are trolling Bandit crankbaits and other rigs for them. You should be able to mark them on your sonar, you just need a presentation to entice them.
I've been doing pretty good long line trolling a double jig rig with a 1/8 oz. in front and either a 1/16 or 1/32 trailing. Other folks prefer to troll with crankbaits.
Keep reading the site and you'll find some real good info on here.
go to the bottom with a heavier jig...
But if you go too deep say below the Thermo cline isn't there little or no oxygen. Would the fish be on the bottom or around structure in a moderate dept like 15' to 25' depth?

Here the oxygen content gets real low in the summer. The Crappie suspend and even follow Shad into shallow water. The biologists say they even start feeding on suspended plankton in the water. All I know is the trollers out fish brush pile fishermen in hot weather here. I have found them alot along a channel drop suspended and other times out on shallow flats.

we fish kansas in july/auguse 12 ft of water fishing trees, dipping said trees, drop to bottom slow reel up, on stockton which is a clear cool lake we fish in 20 to 30 foot of water 12 to 15 ft. down, we troll crank baits in 40 foot of water 12 to 17 ft. down, catch lots of crappie in hot weather, good luck.
