    Default Crankbaits/ pushing vs. pulling

I've experimented the past two years with pulling crankbaits and have enjoyed some success. I generally fish with four rods from the front of the boat and 4 straight out of the back. Speed is generally around 1.7 to 1.9. Caught everything under the sun, Crappie, Bass, Wiskered fish and a few sauger.

I've heard several mention pushing crankbaits and was wondering if you guys who fish this way could explain your set up. How many rods do you typically push and how do you have the cranks rigged? I'd guess under a 2oz or bigger sinker. Also wondered if fishing this way if you could get by trolling at a slower speed.

I plan on trying the cranks out as soon as I get a chance to get back on the water.

i push smaller crankbaits(panfish sized), normally 3/4-1oz barrel sinker. I generally troll much slower than others, if i get up to .08 im speeding. Works great in the heat of the summer.
I loop the sinker like a capps/coleman rig, inline swivel then about 3 foot of line to the bait.

While pulling cranks out the sides of my boat I have pushed cranks out the front. 3 rods out each side of boat and 4 straight out the front like spider fishing.

I rig with an 2oz. weight- swivel- 5 ft. leader then the crank. I just started this one day when the fish slowed down and it works.

I think this is how Mr. Jim on the Mississippi board does it. If you've seen his table then you know it works.

I get 6 miles to the gallon.

    Default Pushing works for me

Just started trolling cranks last year and found that pushing was better for me.I use 2 oz sinker, bead, barrel swivel and about 4 ft leader.I use 6 rods out the front and sometimes use a long pole out each side of the boat with a 1 oz sinker and a little more line out. Speed was 1.5 to 1.9 and I prefer the 300 series bandit and norman deep baby n.One trick I learned was to set your drag very, very loose in case you snag a stump or brush pile. All crappie caught were white crappie no blacks. I guess this is normal because all the videos I've watched I've not seen them catch a black crappie.

It does seem like pushing would be a little easier. Boat control, following contours and all. Just wondered about the speed and whether it was just as effective as pulling. Trial and error, think I'm going to give it a try this year.

I thought he used blade baits or horse head jigs. Didn't know he was pushing crank baits.

I don't think it is his main thing but I am pretty sure when he does use crankbaits he pushes rather than pulls. I've never met him and don't want to speak for him, just thought I remembered seeing him post about pushing them instead of pulling, especially on Arkabutla.

I think he does both Steve. I think he pushes cranks during the hot summer.
