    Default Removing a fishing hook

Ran across this and thought you folks might be interested. Never stuck a hook far enough into myself where I couldn't get it out.

My Dad tells a story of when he was a kid fishing in Florida and decide to put a lure in his pocket. It went in his pocket easy, but when his hand went in to get the lure, it didn't come out so easily. No doctor, just my Grandpa and a pocket knife made a memory that would never be forgotten.

    Anyway, to do it correctly:

Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

And we act like this Nightstalking thing is new.

For some excitment, read the next verse. A special guest arrived, they filled their coolers and had a fish fry on the beach...in the morning. My kind of people.- Bowfin

    Default Wear your teeth down!

I've used the string and yank method on myself and a few others in the "Field". If applied properly, it works real good with minimal extra pain, but it's kindof hard on your teeth!! I usually grit mine so hard that I grind a little off!!

I too have used the string yank and people that I used it on says they didn't feel a thing. I haven't had to use it on myself "yet".

Thanks bowfin for reminding me of a very painful trip to the emergency room. The dink bass put two barbs of a Bomber 1A treble into me, before I could release it. The string method worked on one barb, but not the other!

Boy have I been careful since!

Happened to ME last year jigging. Once I got the nerve a buddy did the string thing and it worked. Then he talked ME into putting my finger in some racing achohol MAN it burned but no after soreness at all.

Thanks for the site Bowfin. It pointed out something I hadn't thought about with this method and that it won't work on certain parts of the body.

I can vouch for the string yank method and it works very well. I hooked my finger on a crank bait on a rod while picking up another rod from several rods on the deck. The hook had imbedded between the second and third joint on the back of my left index finger. My partner used his side cutters to cut the treble hook from the crankbait and then cut the two exposed points from the imbedded hook before actually yanking the hook loose. I held downward pressure on the hook and my partner snap yanked it out. It worked great and fortunately the hook didn't get imbedded on the front side of my finger where the majority of nerve endings are.

One of the things I learned from this experience was just how nice is was to have a set of side cutters with ones fishing tools. With out using those side cutters to release the one treble hook the other treble points were just right there waiting to cause more problems.

When I was about five years old, I did the hook in my finger thing. It was deep enough that Grandpa cut the eye and pulled it on through.
The thing I remember most though was Grandpa putting my finger in a little medicene bottle full of kerosene. He kept one in his tackle box for just such things. He swore by it. Just dipped my finger in it for a few seconds and I never got sore from the fish hook at all.
I'm NOT telling y'all this is a good thing medically, though. I am telling ya it worked for me and Grandpa swore by it.
Your racing alcohol made me think of it, because the kerosene didn't burn.

Coal oil (kersosene) has always been used by the Ozark folks as an antiseptic. Works great.
