there are several ways you can post rig these up. maybe someone already has some pictures of some that they can share with you
Hi
This is Pat in Atlanta-GA. I am going on my kayak this Sunday in a tributary of a local lake about the width of a 3 lane highway at widest.
I usually throw spinners at whatever wants to bite but this season I want to focus on species.
After I was successful this season with the white bass run,I want to continue with crappies, they are where I am going I have been told by 2 different guys that don't know each others.
I got some Berkley powerbait 1" power tubes , 1 is strawberry glitter and 1 is lime sparkle.
1)I have all sorts of jigs. What size jig for these particular tubes?
2)Now how do I rig this?
I assume I am going to stick the lead part of the jig inside the tube until it is all the way down the tube. Then do I cut the tube so the hooks fits nicely or do I pull the tube and sorta impale it on the hook so the hook is nice and flush with the tube?
3) Once I got these rigged can I fish them on a slip bobber? Or shall I cast them and retrieve them without bobber? (I really want to use floats/bobber).
4) Can I add Berkley crappie nibbles to the jig (Nibbles are yellow).
Or can I add scent on these tubes? I have (Don't laugh) walleye attractant and I read a crappie article in the magazine crappie that all flavors of scents (bass, walleye, crappie, panfish....) work for all fish.
I have a nice shimano reel with 4lbs line loaded up.
I have a lot to learn, got tons of books and mags but fishing is Sunday and I got to make the best of it until I learn more.
Final note: Even if this looks like a rookie post, I know how to fish and have done so for close to 43 years. I just haven't focused on crappie at all.
Thanks a lot
Patrick

IMHO ...
With a tube that small ... I'd say use a 1/32oz jighead, and float it under a small float. The Strawberry sounds good for fairly clear water, and the Lime sounds good for stained water.
How you put the tube on the jighead, can depend on the shape of the jighead. I prefer to use ballhead jigheads, and just thread the tube onto the jighead. I push the hook thru the head end of the tube, and bring it out the side at about where the body/tails meet. It can depend on the length of the hook shank vs the length of the tube body, too ... so you may have to push the hook all the way thru the tube.
There are "ball bat" shaped jigheads, called "insert style", that you push the head into the hollow of the tube, then pop the jighead line eye thru the tube & tie onto that. You shouldn't need to do any "cutting" or modifying of the tube, with this style of jighead.
Most tubes I use are 1.5", 1.75", or 2" long (depending on brand). And while I do have quite a collection of hollow tubes, I prefer to use the solid body tubes ... as they seem to stay on the jighead better, and they don't tear up as easily.
You can add most any kind of attractant that you want ... Crappie Nibbles, spray-on scents, rub-on scents, even live bait. PowerBait tubes already have scent built into them ... so it's your choice, as to whether or not to "add" anything.

Welcome from Alabama. You got some pretty good advice in this thread. They know what they are talking about.

Yep!!! Pappy nailed it with his advice. If you use a head that goes inside the tube and you're using fish attractant you can put some cotton up inside and spray the attractant on that and it lasts longer.
OR.... a neat little trick I like to use Alka Seltzer!!!!!!!!! Break it up in little pieces and put some up in the hollow part of the tube and cast it out. The AK fizzles and leaves a bubble trail.
Enjoy!!!!!

Patrick, if you have a pretty open schedule, let me know and I can take you out on Lanier one day and show you how I do it. I only go during the week this time of year.

Thanks for the links, bookmarked, very useful.

Very nice detailed post, I am going to try to rig each of both ways to see what I prefer.
Very good point on the berkley tubes being scented already.

Interesting tip on the alka-seltzer, I will definitely give it a shot soon.

Hi
Well I went on my kayak today on Allatoona lake north of Atlanta. I mostly used 1/16 oz unpainted jigs with Berkley lime sparkle 1' tubes and 1 blue fox spinner.
The spinner did nothing, the Berkley tubes caught me 2 bluegills and 1 LM bass, I also missed 4 or 5 fish.
A monster probably a bass I would assume broke my line, it was a big fish I reeled it all the way to the kayak and then I assume the fish seeing the kayak went straight down in a second and broke the line, but with 6lbs loaded up no chance to reel this one in.
I struggled using a bobber and the jig below, hard to cast and the place I was fishing was anywhere from 2 feet deep to 25 " deep. I am not sure how you guys fish with jigs and floats/bobbers,it seems that combo scared the fishes for me today has few bites came this way, tips appreciated.
I caught the small bluegill while fishing with the bobber, but I had much more success casting the jig out by itself with the tube, letting it sink and slow retrieve.
Unfortunately no crappies for me today but that LM bass I caught gave me a good fight along with the large bluegill.
They all went back in the water.
Thanks
Patrick
the first time recall going out fishing tubes with tube jig heads i rigged one and threw it in the water and got a quick bite probably a bluegill and it tore the tube off my jig first bite(heavier head1/16 or 1/8th). I could not get another tube on without destroying it without untiyng the jig and slipping it in the head and then retying. After that i never used a tube jig again, not worth the trouble. I mail ordered some teezur heads instead. I only use barbed jigheads now.
