Crappie Fishing During Spring's Spawn
Fished the LOZ Glaize arm Saturday. Water varied anywhere from 56 degrees up by the bridge to 67 degrees down closer to PB 1. It seems like the water temperature is getting just right for them to start spitting out eggs, yet we found very few fish up on the bank (even in the warmest water). I've heard people talk about the length of days affects the timing of when the majority of the fish spawn, however wouldn't that indicate that the heat of the spawn should occur on the same days each year? What about the moon? How much does a full moon affect when the majority of the fish will pull up on the bank to start letting the eggs fly?

Here are a few things to think about. The further south you go the
sooner the spawn starts right. Well the length of days is the same for
someone in Missouri as someone in Weezieanna. I think water temp is
the critical factor. Where I live I've seen them start in early April one
year and June on others. Temperature is critical and foremost #1.
All lakes raise a foot when I step in the boat
That is kind of what I was getting at. The back of the Glaize arm at LOZ had 67 degree water in it Saturday afternoon.
I'll throw this out there.
Cold water temps can postpone the spawn.
But warm water temps, will not advance the spawn bofore they are ready.
If they normally spawn April 25th and the water is only 50 degrees, the spawn will be postponed until the water temp reaches "ideal temps" (58-60). Maybe until may 5th or so.
But if the water temp is 58-60 and its only April 10th the spawn will not happen until the normal date of April 25th, regardless of the "ideal temps".
I think southern crappie are on a completly differnt cycle because of more daylight during Fall and Winter, and warmer temps.

Well, I think they should start spawing Thursday, since I took the entire week following off of work.
