What i use is those clamp on shop lights with 60 or 100 watt rv bulbs just clamp it on the light pole other boaters can see it from a long way and you can turn it in any direction.
I need some advice from you night stalkers. Ohio law requires bow and stern lights for night fishing no matter where you are. The stern light is so bright that all we do is try to avoid its shine so we can see in the water. I hung a hat over the light last night to block the light from our eyes and it melted the bulb and housing.
There has to be a way to keep that blinding light out of our eyes yet keep safety for other boaters in mind.

My Wife Fillets The Fish! I am a fortunate man.

I would try a small piece of aluminum foil, these well block the light from you. I have done this with my coleman latterns for catfishing and it keeps me from gettin night blind and still have light on the rods. You might try that.
I still use one rod at a time!!
Extend the pole, get it above your head and use it for a light.
i run a stern light that points up and only shines out of the top mostly and it works great...cant even really tell it is on....but they say you can see it from 3miles away

Can you not turn it off while you are actually fishing? We turn ours off and flip the switch on if we hear a boat running.
Cut a beer can in half,or soda can, lol. The light is visable from all other boaters.Oh yea,put it on top of the light.

Or wear a ball cap.
Seriously though, I cant figure out how the stern light could be a problem unless it is on a very short pole. Guess you could get an adapter and run a string of the ice cicle Christmas lights around the top of the boat. That should make the boat very visible and keep the light out of your eyes. Rig 'em up right and you could run a set of yo-yo's on the light strand and get more baits in the water.:D
We have to have a light that is visible from every direction at night. I also would get a light that is taller and try to build a round shield to attach under the light so it can not shine down and make it easy to install so you can take it off when not needed.
By time I get my nightstalking lights out you would have to be blind not to see me!!!LOL
