Default What #Thrust Trolling Motor ?

I have a Bass Tracker 17ft Pro w/ 60hp mercury. What thrust poundage do you guys suggest. I have thought about 12v and 24v. I crappie fish (jigging, minnow/cork, little trolling) plus fly fish and bass fish. I just can't make up my mind. What are the advantages to 24v over 12v. Also, advantages of 12v over 24v systems. Thanks, Harold

I had the same boat until about 8 months ago. Had a 12v 40 lb thrust and I never thought it was big enough. If the wind got up you could forget it.

Besides more power a 24V system will run longer each trip.

I had the same dilemma with my new boat I just purchased. I got a 16' Lund Pro Guide and the input on this site convinced me to get a 24V system. I ended up getting a 24V 80lb thrust Minn Kota Terrova.

Minn Kota 55 thrust. You will not regret it. It will make your boat travel 2.5 mph.
My 14 foot aluminum boat, 3.5mph. Wind or not it will push your boat. Plus that is the end of the line for single 12volt. I keep 2 deep cycle batteries on board and have never used the second even after 7 hours of fishing.

I use a MinnKota 101 trust, 36 Volt which is a little overkill, but I know after trolling all day my batteries are still at 90%. I would suggest 24 V, but most importantly, variable speed, NOT multi-speed, this gives you a better speed control. With multi-speed one number may be too fast, you go down a number & it's too slow. Stay away from 12/24 systems. My buddy has one & it really stinks. When he's on 12V it draws off 1 battery, then when he kicks it up to 24V or 2 batteries the fresh battery goes quickly. Have fun, I hope I've helped.
