Lately I've been fishing pretty deep, 30' to 40' and more often than not when I catch a short fish it will appear to be dead (air bladder problem). When I put them back into the lake they float away, sometimes they swim off and sometimes they die. Today I discovered that if I would give those fish a toss into the air rather than ease them back into the water, they would always swim off immediately. Guess the belly flop knocks the air back into em!!

Fishawk: what is happening is their bladders inflate do to the loss of water pressure,You can take a old syringe with out the plunger or buy a bends mender and deflate by poking it into the bladder just behind the pectorial fin. They will be just fine.

Don't need a needle, like I said, toss em into the air, when they hit the water they swim off! Try it.

Seen deep sea fishin' guys do something similar. I do it also, but I don't toss them in the air, I just throw them pretty hard head first and they take off straight down.

I hold them by the tail and drop them straight down so they hit head first with their mouth open. Sometimes it takes a few drops for them to take off. When it works you will see bubbles come out of the fishes mouth. I think the force of the water pushes the swim bladder back in and that's when the bubbles come out. Until the bubbles come out the fish will go down a ways then float back up.
