Default Smaller lures for colder waters ?

Do Crappie prefer a smaller profile lure to a larger on when water temps are colder (35*-50*) ? As a size reference by smaller I mean a 2" tube jig or Blakemore turbo tail compared to a somewhat larger profile Crappie Thunder body. -Thanks

scale down on all, smaller line, smaller jig and a slower presentation always worked for me...

    Default smaller

Ive had times when i got not bites in a specific area and switched dowm to a really small white fly and and caught fish after fish, small crappie and bluegill. I believe smaller is more natural if they can see it espically in shallower spooky water. Ive had it produce big trout to.

In a resevoir system where the main forage base is shad I would say no. This time of year the young of the year from last years crop are getting full size. Match what the crappie are keying on. Now in the lakes I fish they are keying on shad. They have been hitting on tubes tipped with a 2-3" shiner, definately not a small profile bait.

If I was sitting in a boat and not catching any fish I would make a change in something, size, color, spot, something.

I caught 30 yesterday with a 3" grub and usually fish with a 1.5". Water temp was 42 and fish were 30' deep. Like the previous post said the shad this time of year are large and that is what they are keying on. Reserviour type lake that is.

Many times I fish a 1/64 with Kip or micro tail and really load the boat. Other times nothing works but a 1/16 with 1.5 Inch over all profile. Kip or hackles tail.

For me the main thing is are they being picky and don't care if it's because it's cold or hot or what ever is making them picky. picky fish you need small jigs or baits and you will do better. It can be for numerous reasons that they get picky.

At least that is what I think,
