    Default Does Size Matter!

I wanted to find out what size of lure everyone is using. I was at Cabela's a couple of weeks ago when Charles Bunting put on a seminar. He said that he uses 4" lures (mostly to week out the dinks) and 10 lb. test.

I've been using 1.5" Southern Pro Tube Jigs and occasionally switch to a 2". I use 6 lb. high vis line. I used to use 4lb., but switched when the line would break after about 20 catches.

So, what kind of lures, size or lures, and lb test line do you use?

Local fishing here, I stick with the 1.5" tubes, but when I have fished with some guys at Truman, they gave me some 3" baits that I think helped to catch the bigger fish.
If I use the larger baits here, If I catch any, they ain't no bigger than what I catch with the smaller.

I imagine there is a time and place for all sizes, but after taliking with Jigging15 one day I rarely use anything less than 2 inch anymore and often will use 3 inch on Truman

After seeing four inch or bigger shad spit up in the live well I don't have any qualms about using much larger baits.

I usually use a tandem jig set up with the larger bait on the bottom and sometimes the jig spacing will be less that 12 inches apart. My reasoning here, which may be questionable, is thinking that one fish seeing another fish in pursuit of a smaller bait may trigger another fish to go after the occupied and distracted pursuer fish. One can generate all kinds of reasons while fishing.

I've always heard bigger baits bigger fish and do tend to buy into that notion but I have several occurrences where I've caught small crappie not very much larger that the bait I was using.

I must have been asleep when I attended the 10 am session. I think I recall Charles saying he never used anything smaller than 2" as he was after the larger crappie (with some emphasis on tournament fishing).

I think I will continue to use some of the smaller jigs while locating the crappie. Then, consider using larger ones to catch some of the larger crappie. Just a thought....

I read once that you should vary your bait length throughout the year. Start the season out with 1 to 1.5" to mimic the shad spawn. Then later in the year switch to large bait.

I was fishing once in mid summer with a 2.5" tube jig. I switch color to color, depth to depth, and could not catch a thing. When I moved down to a 1.5" tub jig, the bite was one. Don't know if that was a fluke or not, but will keep it in mind this year when the bite is slow.
