Ever since I was big enough to fish, my kin, my buddies and all else pronounced "CRAPPIE" with a long "A" sound... But Now I do hear the "A" pronounced like an "O"...
Which is correct? "Crappie" or "Croppie"??? Personally I don't care as long as everybody knows I pronounce it correctly..."crAppie"!!!!

Well, for me it depends on the day. If I'm catchin' them I call them Cr-ah-pie, but on days when I cant find them I usually call them things I can't post on this forum.

Hasn't that one been beat to death already by it'self? LOL!

And lets not forget the 9mm vs .45, the Ford vs Chevi, and the Blonde vs Brunet.

... it's all been hashed & rehashed, before. But, with this many members, you gotta expect differences of opinion. We all agree to disagree, without retaliation, so let's not let a simple question get us all in a tizzy :D

Generally speaking : it's pronounced "croppie"
In some regional areas : it's pronounced "crappie"

Pronunciation: \ˈkrä-pē\
Function: noun
Etymology: Canadian French crapet
Date: circa 1827

Supposedly, it comes from a French/Canadian verbilization of "crapet" from a French word used for crepes (pancakes), supposedly due to the shape of the fish resembling a pancake. I say "supposedly", because there's no definitive proof, as of yet, that this is the origin of the word. The English verbilization of the "et" part of "crapet" ... is a long E (ee) sound - whereas the French verbilization of "et" is more of an "eh" sound. So 'krop eh' becomes 'krop ee' .... or something like that. :p

Anyway ... bottom line is - call'em what you want, pronounce it how you will ... it's all good. No need to get a N vs S, us vs them polarizing debate going. The title had enough info to warn people of its content ... so, if you don't wish to offer a respectable answer, or you're tired of the same question periodically returning, then I suggest you just skip past it ;)

... cp

My dad calls them white perch.
I call them sacalait which means sack of milk. French term.
If I'm on the crappie.com section I spell it crappie and if I'm on the louisiana state section I spell it sacalait so people will know what i'm talking about. At least that's what I try to do.
