Question How Much Is It Worth

Does anybody have a good idea how much a 15 horse johnson outboard
tiller type motor is worth. its approximately 20 years old. a friend of mine wants to seel me his but neither of us have an idea what its worth.
the dealers here gave me estimates from 125 to 500. is there a book or
something on the web i can look up?
    thanks

My guess if it runs good, and the internal wiring still has it's insulation in place, it should go for $400 - $500 on ebay. I sold an 84 model 25hp on ebay for $650 and the guy paid shipping, (fed ex) to NY, an extra $178!
I crated it real nice and secure for him. He took it directly to his Marine Mechanic and had him go through the usual. He wrote me back and said
that it checked out just fine and thanked me for the bargain.
A 15hp will push a 14' aluminum boat like a mofo. A good friend had one with it and it cruised very nice. Check out ebay, and the prices they are going for. There are bargains to be had if you are patient enough though. Perhaps your friend will sell it to you for a bit less if you take him out. Good luck Chef!

If you go to www.nada.com and select the boats option there is a tab for outboard motors. Fill in the blanks for year, make, model, etc. and you will find your worth in accordance to your zip code.

A few years back I paid $450 for a 15hp that was about your year model. It was very clean, had been rebuilt a few years before I got it. The shifter was very tight and the grears felt good. Put it on the small boat, replacing a 9.9, and the boat took off. I ending up selling both motors and the small boat about 6 months after I got the 15hp.

If you can get it for 125,that would be a steal assuming its a good motor.300 sounds about right if its a amount you both can live with.Don't want to rip off your friend, but also don't want to overpay.

Its just me-but I try to avoid having any type of financial dealings with close friend or relatives. It just ain't worth it to me.

I agree, especially when it's a fuzzy area such as the right price.

Chef, if you get it, Change the impeller(waterpump) and slap on new coils. All older johnsons are prone to inconsistant coil problems.Other than that, they run.........
