I have used the one's that you put on your rods.My experience with them was it was a waste of money.Sometimes they work sometimes they don't.You are better off ordering you some of those 24.95 Okuma reels.

Not trying to be smart...but probably one of a few companies in China that are contracted to make all the other reels in the world.

I hate to do it but I'm gonna have to go caps lock here...

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, GET THE BASS PRO BRAND LINE COUNTER. FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY AND ALL THINGS SACRED DO NOT GO DOWN THAT LONG ROAD WHICH WILL BE LITTERED WITH THE REMNANTS OF WHAT USE TO BE A LINE COUNTER!!!!

I'm sorry, I feel embarrassed, I'm going to go clean screws and plastic and little foam pieces with crappy glue on them from the floor of my boat now...

Thanks G3. I went to thier site, then googled up some reviews on that reel. They were all 5's, so I went ahead and got me some. I bought a couple of Cabelas brand line counters for the coast and they are real cheaply made. I'd stay away from them.

I have never used a line counter but last year we started taking a black permanent marker and marking the line at the reel. It worked very well. Just a tip you might try.

I used to do that, but what do you do when you break off an unknown amount of line?
For vertical fishing i use a 11' rod and I put 3 pieces of tape every foot on the rod. For deep fishing(15-30') I almost always watch my sinker and jigs on the depth finder and if your seeing fish you can get right on them.I never have trolled off the back of the boat.
