    Default Choices

This is totally a preference issue. I decided about 25 years ago to learn jigs and stay with them. I never buy minnows or shinners. I feel that if they will hit a minnow, then there is a jig/color/presentation that they will hit and it's up to me to figure that out. I've sat and watched people with minnows (shinners) catch fish left and right while I was catching nothing, but most of the time they watch me. Then again it comes down to what YOU want. If you are more comfortable with minnows, then try tipping a jig with a minnow. If the jig thing seems too much, then stay strictly with minnows. If you don't like the high price of minnows then get good with jigs. It boils down to YOUR PREFERENCE. All we can do is tell you what we like. Hope this helps and I know you'll get alot of response to it both ways.:D

I'm STRICTLY jigs. Don't even like to have minners in the boat. I will use them at night around a lite but usually only night fish if can't get out during the day.

Minners have their place, it just ain't on my hook or in my boat.

I like to fish jigs most of the year, but when the water temps get down below 60 in the lake we fish, we seem to do better tight-lining minnows. But as has already been said, it boils down to how you like to fish.

I have noticed I can fish pretty well with the minnow fisherman when I put a crappie nugget behind the jig...so I seldom use minnows, and man they are getting expensive too!

    Default Jigs or minnows

    Good discussion.
I used to be only minnows. about 6-7 years ago I started experimenting with jigs.
Only used jigs the last 4-5 years. I feel that there are many times when jigs
    [fished properly] will outfish minnows.

I would ask you how well you know the water and the fish. If you know where they are at fish them with jigs. I am learning crappie jigs myself. I used to only fish minnows. Caught a lot of slabs on shiners, its fun and easy. I have only caught 2 crappie my last 12 times out in November, been fishing with minnow and everykind of jig. Have not been seeing many mid water fish and have located zero brush piles so far. Thanksgiving day 2-15" crappie off minners.
When I find them its cool to use one of the 200 crappies jigs in the box.

Man what ever you can catch them with.

If you dont like the price of minnows buy a casting net. 12 bucks.

Never leave home without them. Jigs, minnows, roadrunners, and rattle traps. I am going out to catch fish with something. I ain't proud or professional. I even thought about "cherry bombs" and egg sinkers...ha
