Safe ice can be 4" , but it depends more on the hardness of the ice , not thickness when it starts melting . First ice is usually the hardest , and last ice being the softest and most unsafe.

There is NO SAFE ice! Look at some of the MN fishing boards and you will know what I'm saying. They don't trust it even when it's 3' thick, but they will chance it when it's 4" thick and they carry ice picks in case they go thru.

goose hunted today on the upper end of a lake today south of KC and the ice had slush on top and by noon you could barely walk on it! you would break through every few steps! and the ice was every bit of 4 to 5 inches thick but very very rotten! so i would prob be pretty catious with any ice i thought about walkin on!
