    Default help for newbie

New to crappie fishing and need tips on techniques. I do have a boat and depth finder(not fancy). Any ideas on how to find crappie and ways to fish for them.

Welcome to the madhouse!! Just read through the past posts in all of the forums and you will have no problem finding fish on your next outing. There is a wealth of info here. Otherwise, get an 10' jig pole with a light jig on the business end and start dipping in next to trees and other cover. Good luck!

Watch your depth finder and search for submerged brush. Or check out the Crappie Structure forum here and make your own! Bridge pilings, peoples piers and boat docks are great because you know exactly where they are. They'll also relate to bottom changes (IE humps, channels, ect).

For gear it's pretty simple...a light 4-10 lb test setup, whatever length rod you like. You can troll jigs and crankbaits, toss a minnow under a float to a good looking spot, hold long rods over the structure, ect.

If you wanna go the live bait route I'd recommend a bait bucket, #4-1 aberdeen hook, a small float and a few split shots. Get a few dozen minnows and have fun.

If you want jigs, there's hundreds of possibilities out there. Anything white, chartreuse, or pink are great, and many other colors. I'd recommend 1/16th oz #4 sickle hooks to start with...very versatile size. 1/8th oz all the way down to 1/64th oz and smaller are used but mainly in cold water or ice fishing. Check out my website and drop me a line if you want anything.

You can start by reading this...http://www.crappie.com/crappie/archi...s.html...along with other good info the "Archives" forum on the Main Forum Page...

Then, with the info of where the fish "should" be....obtain equipment for the different styles of fishin that you would like to try...castin, jiggin, draggin, driftin, crankin, spider riggin, dippin, ...I'm sure I missed a few styles, but anyway,....

Crappie like structure....brush, stakebeds, standin trees, riprap, etc...

Crappie also like creek channels, humps, roadbeds, etc....

    And don't forget to read...read...read....here at crappie.com.....

Welcome Stoddard, and here is my advice:

    1. Read about crappie fishing
    2. Watch TV programs about crappie fishing.
    3. Talk to anyone who will listen to you about crappie fishing. (WARNING: Your wife will listen to you at first but once she realizes you are never going to shut up she'll tune you out and pretty much leave you alone and in some cases, really alone) THEN:
    4. Go fishing when the weather is nice.
    5. Go fishing when the weather is bad.
    6. Go fishing during daylight hours.
    7. Go fishing at night.
    8. Go fishing when the fishing tables say it is the best time to do so.
    9. Go fishing when the fishing tables say it is the worst time to do so.
    10. Go fishing when there is a full moon. (NOTE: If the moon is not full, the heck
    with it, go fishing anyway.)
    11. Go fishing when the barometer is rising.
    12. Go fishing when the baramoter is falling or steady.
    13. When not participating in numbers 4 to 12, participate in numbers 1 through 3.

Oh, did I mention anything about making your own jigs or pouring your own weights?

Don't worry about becoming a total fanatic about this, I assure you there is no such thing.
GET THE NET HAROLD, GET THE NET!!
