From what I read. Rango does a lot of night fishing. He would be a good one to consult with. I think Falcon Smitty does his fair share as well.
Anyone done any night fishing for Crappie? I haven't done it much. I usually jig fish but have tried at night, having to break down and put a minner on the hook. My main question is this...When night fishing, do you usally catch fish below the light and shallow or deep. As I recall the times I have night fished, i still fished deep like 12 feet. can the lite get down that deep? If not, does the lite really help or do we just think it helps.

I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin' and hook up with them later.
yea the light helps. It starts a chain reaction of attraction. Microscopic organisms are attracted to the light, this attracts bigger organisms and so on until the minnows and shad show up. This brings the crappie and other preditor fish. The light can be in the water or in the air. It will attract fish.
Use your depth finder. It will show you the depth of the bait fish.. I fish just below them or in them near the bottom of the swirl. Bridges and other vertical cover are great places plus the channel narrows under most bridges. I like to fish humps in open water of major creek channels. I like to fish dock lights with jigs and lil fishies. Remember at night you can't retrieve your jig to slow Check out Rango's article in the article section link at the top of this page. Good luck to ya.. Oh yeah Paint your rod tips white about 6 inches. Makes them 90% easier to see.
Nothing is better than a great calm night catching crappie.

I too fish a lot at night. Of course Falcon Smitty is right on. I also use jigs tipped with small minnows. Hook the minnow from just behind the bottom lip up thru just behind the top lip. I like to float a light and I also use a light in the boat. I bought a fog lamp for a car at wally world, attached an extension cord to it, spliced on some battery clips and mounted it on a piece of angled metal strapping that's small enough to stick in a seat pedestal base. I used to use a lantern but I was using up too many fuel canisters. It gives me plenty of light inside and outside the boat.
Try to fish outside the light circle in the water if possible. Look at the articles on this site, Rango has an excellent one on night stalking. Good luck
