    Default Guppies

Just a thought has anyone ever thought of using store bought guppies for bait?
Be and a buddy were talking and he brought up the idea, due to there colored tails guppies could be great crappie bait. At the same time could they mess up the lake ecosystem?

    What do y'all think?

I have never used them in a lake but have in a pond. I have a freind that fishs with a red tailed guppy in the lake and he catches the fire out of fish. As far as mess up the lakes ecosystem? I don't know but they will raise really fast in a pond and finaly over populate.

You'll have to check your state regs on that.

Also, guppies are a tropical fish and do better in water over 70 degrees. They could probably handle cooler water but not as well as others.

I'm not worried about raising them I just wanna be sure if one got off my hook if I would have to worry about them taking over the native species

I think I saw that guppies were taking over a lake or river somewhere in the USA and they were informing people not to dump them in lakes and streams. But I could have dreamed that.

i wouldnt use them for bait at all. im not sure of the legality of using them but i wouldnt chance it. they have been known to take over warmer bodies of water and they have a technique of harrasing other fish into spawning with them so there own species doesnt reproduce....this fish will eventually be on invasive species list.

plus why spend like 99 cent per bait when you can get a bunch of minnows for alot cheaper

Minnows are cheaper. Tie a Kip tail jig to imitate a minnow too. Most places you cannot use store bought tropical fish to catch gamefish.

Yeah, seems like it would be an expensive bait to use!
