    Default mayfair livewell pump problems

Just Bought A Livewell Pump And The Installaion Went Really Good No Problems With That. But It Doesn't Want To Prime Without Backing The Boat Up??? Why. Never Had A Livewell Pump Before. Do You Just Turn It On And Wait For It To Burn Up Or Dry Running It Doesn't Hurt It??? Coments And Pm Welcomed..

I can't help you on the priming part but sure think those Mayfair cartridge pumps are really nice since they are so very easy to change out to a new motor and blades if the motor quits on you.

It's installed at back right? should always have water as inlet opening is below water line of boat, pump hasn't been raised up higher that inlet has it? sorry can't figure this one out

If you have it installed right....pump mounted on the bottom of the boat and a thru-hull inlet slightly above the bottom of the boat.....then water will be in the line as well as the pump anytime the boat is in the water and no priming is neccessary.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

you may have a sag in your hose that is holding water and causing an airlock

Check the impeller. My recirculating pump(mayfair) wouldn't prime and it had a broken impeller.

Most transoms are built on an angle causing the thru hull fitting of the pump to be on a slightly upward angle as the fitting comes thru the transom....

Then, when the hose is attached to the thru-hull fitting it causes the hose between the fitting and the pump to look like an upside down smile....

This upside down smile creates an air pocket between the fitting and the pump which creates the 'airlock' that the other guys mention....

If you can't eliminate the air pocket...there are other pumps on the market that mount directly thru the transom that eliminates the need for a hose between the thru-hull fitting and the pump......

i had the same problem . i took the pump in and out several times but still no luck. finally i bought a new pump. it did the same thing. i finally figured out that the out let going to the livewell had to be pointed upwards. if not it kept air inside the pump and i had an airlock. i rotated the outlet upwards and my problem was fixed. it has worked perfectly every since. i hope this helps.

I have the same problem when I first launch my boat. I move over to the side of my intake and jog switch on and off. If this doesnt work I back boat up slowly. Usually one of the two ways works. However Im a little supersticious I dont like to fill live well until I catch a Keeper. The pump seems to pick up great once the boat has moved through the water. Just a minor annoyance I can live with. Bottombumper
