Does the color of the crappie determin how long he has been in the shallows?

Gobblehunter,I know here in Iowa when the crappies come up in the shallows for awhile to spawn they do get dark.I've seen some almost pure black before.I'm not sure how much water color plays into this.I've been told the longer they're shallow the darker they get. Here's a pic. of one that I got last weekend that's starting to get darker color in the gills and belley.
:D Give a man a crappie you feed him for a day...teach a man to fish for crappie and get rid of him for the weekend!!!
