I've done it. About 25 years ago, I had a pond made and tried to stock it in balance. I started by stocking in a food supply by buying a few hundred bluegill minnows. The next summer I stocked in a mix of bass - all sizes, keeping track to have a "pyramid" of size classes, 20 or so up to 1 pound, fewer bigger, and up to 3 or 4 fish over 4 pounds. The following late fall added 1000 fathead minnows. Next spring one flathead and a few channels and blues. It ended up producing 10-15 bass 5-6 pounds apiece, the flathead got up over 20 pounds, channels were about 8-10 pounds, and a few blues about 20 pounds. I got advice from MDC fisheries biologists, and they said that the "don'ts" are (1) mixing panfish species - avoid bluegill and crappie in large numbers; (2) keep out green sunfish (black perch) and (3) avoid flathead. They also said that an acre of water will support an average of 90 pounds of fish, so keep an eye on it and harvest accordingly. Finally, they warned against crappie unless you're going to harvest fish fairly regularly because they are such successful spawners.
