How much line do you let out when you start trolling?

I just make a good long cast (40-50 ft) and let it settle. I may reel in some if needed but mostly I adjust to the bottem by the speed of the boat.

I give it a good throw back in stained water now if I am on a clear lake I let it out a little futher you can adjust your bait depth by speed and jig size.

Two 1/8 oz jigs, 2' apart on 6lb fireline and 40' of line out with the boat speed at 1 mph will put the baits right at 14 feet deep. Almost all of our troll crappie that are biting are caught between 12 and 16 feet of depth. Sometimes they want it fast or slower so we change the amount of line out to keep the depth the same at whatever speed we are going but thats the most common. mono lines run less deep at the same speeds and some are to buoyant to even use in our opinion.

I mostly use a 1/32 oz jig or Roadrunner in the spring and fall when long line trolling and I just cast it as far as I can and take off. I usually cast it to the side some and just let it pull behind. If I am using say a 1/16 then I would be careful to not cast it as far as I can and probably just let out enough that I think it will be at the level I want, but I have caught crappie long line trolling lots of time in 12'-14' of water with a 1/32 and even one time last year in 20' with a 1/32oz as they were suspended and they will come up some to get it.
