I have a motorguide, I think its like a 46lb thrust. I've had it about nine months. I am not impressed with it at all. If I have to replace it, I'll buy a Minn Kota.
Sorry for all the questions but my trolling motor is going to be in need of replacement either yet this Fall or at the latest next Spring. I currently have a motorguide that came with my tracker pro 17 and honestly have not cared for it. (keep in mind it is a 1993) I am sure they have improved over the years and am definitely not ruling another one out. I am going to go with a 12 volt system and probably looking at a 45 or 55 pound thrust. Your Thoughts?
Thanks,
Steve
I REFUSE TO CATCH MY FISH AT KROGERS!!

I made the mistake once of buying a Motor Guide radio-control model, one
of the first, without talking to anyone who had one first... It is a dud,
and even though I've had great service out of my transom-mount MG, I'll
probably be looking to Minn-Kota for my next one. I bought both of them
12V, didn't want to carry around the extra weight, but ended up having to
carry two batteries anyway. I use a lot of juice, and sometimes fish in excess
of 8 hours at a time, so I'll probably go 24V or even 36V on my next one,
according to how much boat I can afford. On the weight, it actually ended up helping me to have a little more weight in the bow. Got both troll batts
under the front deck, and 6 gallon gas tank.

I don't fish as hard as I use too, I have had nothing but Minn Kota TM's, I'm very satisfied with them. I have bought one bad off the shelf, but was able to exchanged it with no hassle.
Minn kota auto pilot the only way to fly. If Im draging crank baits I can set the auto pilot and take fish off . And the boat will still be moving at the same speed and direction.
I have the 65 lb 24 volt. and can go up river in the boils at pickwick dam. Plenty of power in my 2072 boat.

When our Motorguide bit the dust earlier this year, we decided to go with a Minn Kota. It's quieter and it was worth it just for the lift assist. It's WAY easier to pull up and not so hard on the arm and shoulder!

Yes, I fish like a girl. If you tried a little harder, you could too!!
I know nothing about new ones but in real life situations on trolling motor only lakes, lily pads and coontail, motorguide kicked butt. But that was 10 years ago probably. I never considered the other guys at all.
The only MinnKota I've personally owned was about a '89 model, 24V
bow mount - I didn't care for the mount, or the way it growled -
it was like the old Mercury "Thrusters", remember them? I think it had
a planetary reduction gearset in the motor - Turned a HUGE prop, but slow.
I felt like it scared fish, but I think a lot has changed since then.
After being sold on Lowrance/Eagle products, I'm even about ready to give
Hummingbird another go, if I keep hearing good stuff on the side-scan.

I could tell you some horror stories about Motorguide, including the new PTSv. Thank God BPS took it back. Minnkota Autopilot is the only way to go. I just wish they would change their mount and told them so.
