Default I know most on here BUY minners but

why not just use a cast net and catch shad, They're the crappies main food source and they're FREE with a casting net.

cause with a cast net you got to find the shad before you can fish. I come prepared in case the minnows go on strike that day.

I've dipped up a few and added them to my minner bucket while night fishing before. The didnt seen to stay active very long. I'd think you'd go thru ALOT more trouble with shad having to bring a bait tank to keep 'em. Besides, I'd rather spend my time fishing instead of worrying about catching bait since I work and have limited fishing time.

Tough to keep the Shad alive also, guess it doesn't really matter as much if you're trolling though.

Problem with casting a net below any spillway and then fishing on the lake above the spillway is its hard to tell the diff. between shad and asian carp.Dont think any one wants them in our lakes, play it safe and buy minners.

It's mostly that they are so fragile, hard to keep alive.

What everyone else said. You gotta have a speacial setup to keep them more than about 15 min....Gotta be either a round or oval tank, with water flowing in a circular motion, or they will kill themselves running into the sides....
