I have kept a decent supply of minnows alive in an aquarium for several months at a time. Keep the water clean, pH balanced, and feed them a time or two a week and they will be fine.
I have bred tropical fish but never minnows.
I had about three dozen minnows left over from my last trip to Guntersville. I thought I would be going back there in about two days so I am keeping them in a styrofoam cooler. I am wondering if anyone on here has ever tried to raise and breed minnows. If so How did it work out and what tips can you share.

Mike....take those minnows and that brand new Wally Marshall rod you bought yesterday and go catch some fish. Remember...you can always cut the grass later. :D
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Are you sure its ok with their parents.
Keeping them alive in an aquarium is not so easy. They need really clean water with a strong current. At least two filters. Remember minnows are stupid and will die in a corner with still water. Most home aquariums just are not set up for this but it can be done.
I keep them in a 100 gallon stock tank for months at at time. Also throw them in pond. They will grow and bread. And within 3 years its over run with them.
When it cools off I have one pond that is close to 1 acre. That will get about 50 lbs of minnows about 4" to 10" and stop buying high priced minnows in 2 years.
Also the metal 100 gallon stock tanks work best. I sit mine on concrete and even in winter time it keeps them. The black Resin ones don't work half as good. Going back to the Long metal one for this winter and minnow.

Thanks all. So far they have lasted two weeks. 35 gal tank. Plenty of aeration as well as rock formations. Double filtration system. Hope they continue to hide in the cave formations and breed.

I don't know about breeding them, but I've kept em alive for several months by making sure there was enough water to support the numbers and placing some algae or weed of some sort from a lake in the bucket for oxygen. Though this was when the temps were staying between 45 and 65.
