Zebra mussels at Pomme de Terre

It looks like these little creatures are beginning to spread. Although it sounds like most of the problems for boats are mainly those left in the water at least a couple of days, everyone should take a little precaution to eliminate boat problems and the spread of these little creatures....

Fisheries biologists from the Missouri Department of Conservation are concerned about the recent discovery of zebra mussel larvae at Pomme de Terre Lake.

Zebra mussels, an invasive species, are known to multiply quickly, competing with native fish and other aquatic creatures for food. They can become so numerous that they clog water intakes and boat motors’ cooling systems.

Reservoirs such as El Dorado in Kansas already have large populations of the zebra mussels, and the invasive species has been discovered at Missouri reservoirs like Lake of the Ozarks. But the discovery of zebra mussel larvae at Pomme de Terre caught biologists by surprise.

The larval zebra mussels can live in your livewell and even stay alive if the carpet on your trailer stays wet. Please power wash your boat and trailer as recommended. Drain all livewells and pull the plug so your hull can drain. A spray bottle with a bleach solution can treat your livewells, just rinse them after a 10 minute treatment. With them being found in Pomme, we are considering Truman inhabited as well. So far we have not found any at Smithville, but the sampling that found them in Pomme hasn't been analyzed for Smithville yet. A little care with your equipment can help a great deal. Thanks

I wonder how long it takes before you start to notice physical changes to the water, such as clarity?

Zebra mussels do reproduce quickly. They have been in LOZ for three years now. I would say at least 3 to 5 years to see any noticeable difference.
