"pulling" is something I can see that could be very good, but I need to learn more.

Yes we do have come good crappie in West Virginia. Around the area i grew up we call them "specs" :p
Besides crankbaits, I have had very good luck with tube jigs. I usually put about 40-50 feet of line out and troll at about 1.2 mph (range from .8 - 2 mph to get the depth I want). I use 1/16 oz heads with 1.5" or 2" tubes for depths less than 6 feet. I step up to 1/8 oz heads and 2" umbrella tube jigs when I need to get a little deeper. I will even use 1/4 oz heads when I want to get near the bottom in around 15 feet of water. I fill the tube with nibbles for scent and added weight.
