    Default Preserving Catalpa Worms??

Since catalpa worms are seasonal does anybody have any good ideas on how to preserve or freeze them?

    Thumbs up Mineral oil

Best way I have heard is to put them in a jar and pour in enough Mineral Oil to cover them ... keep them cold as in the fridge ... also another way is to mix them up in corn meal and keep cold.

The Mineral Oil keeps them from drying out so bad.

    My 2 cents worth

I freeze them. They will keep from one year to the next if done right. My process is to blanch them for one minute in boiling water. Put them into ice water after the one minute and cool completely. Add fruit fresh to the ice water. After they are cooled put one half to one teaspoon of fruit fresh into a zip bag add water to cover the worms you are going to put in the bag, add worms, try to remove as much air as you can and freeze. Good luck!

Cover worms with cornmeal, place in container. (Cigar box works well) put in freezer. I have kept them up to a year this way. They will start moving when thawed. Just reflex I guess.

I would just like to know where to buy some. I sure don't see them around like I did when I was a kid.

My trees used to bear the biggest crop the first of July. I had worms for years, but last year and this year...nadda.:o

Any of the methods above will work but they are better when eaten fresh off the tree. :D
