    Default Jeep distributor

I know this is way off topic, but my son's 1995 Jeep Cherokee was running fine last night but when he tried to start it this morning, it wouldn't fire. When I came home this afternoon, we checked the plug wires. No spark. I was getting voltage from the coil wire to the distributor cap but no voltage to the plug wires. I think the ignition pickup has gone bad. If I change it, I'll need to pull the distributor.

How hard is this to accomplish? I know there are some of you on here more automotively mechanically minded than I. Thanks,
    Chris aka Speck.

    Speck,

Is it an inline 6? if so try this pull the distributor cap and look at it to see if there is moisture on the inside, if so look for spider web looking marks. If so you may be able to use some WD 40 on it but I would recommend replacing it. I had this problem several times with my jeeps and when it got bad you would not get any voltage at the plug wires.

Pulling the distibutor shouldn't be that bad, I like having the rotor pointing to the number one cylinder inside the cap and mark the distributor housing shaft down to the engine block so you know where to put it back in so you won't throw off the timing, remove the distributor lock bolt and it should come straight out.. If you don't know where number one cylinder is just mark where the rotor is pointing in the cap. Had a 1996 jeep years ago with kind of the same problem, it ended up being a sensor that reads a spot on the flywheel that controls the ignition timing. Hope this helps and good luck.

I had a 96 grand Cherokee after I sold it to my older brother he had some moisture issues. Ended up replacing the cap. Had a very small crack and suck in the humidity or moisture after a heavy rain. Still had some fire though just would run like crap for awhile.

Thanks everyone. It is an inline 6, Bender. I knew you all would come through.

Hey Stan, nope its still not running. I changed the distributor cap and rotor but still no voltage to the spark plugs. I'm thinking the pickup is bad which means pulling the distributor to replace it. Was going to do it this evening but had a call in Jackson for a water heater that quit, so I'm going to put it off till tomorrow.
