    Default Big fish bait?

Will be camping this weekend and instead of doing a sierous nightstalk for crappie I would like to anchor up on a point toss some rods out and relax Not interested in loading the boat down with catfish but if by chance a monster cat would come along It would be welcome excitement. Would be released of course. My question is what bait should I use to target only the bigger fish. I've tried cut herring and that catches everything. If suggesting any type of live bait I'll need to know how to rig it too.Thanks.

Glad you brought that up. Will mullet work in a lake also or just a river that is not cut off from the ocean by dam. If so my local grocery store sells them pretty cheap. Will those work? Thanks

It really depends on where you are fishing as to what bait you use... A good rule to go by as far as big fish go... bigger bait = bigger fish. I like to use big cut bait for blue cats and a big live bream for the flatheads. That is what works for me... Hope that helps.

For Flatheads use big Green Sunfish or as we call them Ricefield Slicks.
For Channels almost anytime of bait.
Big Blues use Shad or Skip Jack (type of fresh water Herring)

When using green sunfish, do you fish them on the bottom or suspend them under a float or jug?

If you are targeting only large "trophy" size fish use big bait. I've used live suckers 8" long in the past with success. Sunfish, bluegills, small mouth bass, bullhead, and shad all will work To a giant flathead if it swims it's food. as to depth it depends on water depth, water temp, river or lake, and too many other factors to mention I set one rod on the bottom Carolina rig and another under a float.

    Good Luck
    Matt
