Male vs Female

Is there a absolute way to tell a male from a female anytime of the year? I've seen Midwest Crappie shows where they call them "thats a nice looking male/female crappie". Or is that just possible during spawing time of the year?

before. Outside of the spawn when the males turn dark, you reall can't. Those guys on the shows don't know by sight. It might be by location of the fish at a certain time of the season (i.e. males in the shallows after spawn protecting the fry, etc.).

Unless it is the spawn they are full of it.

I have lifted the tail and peeped on numerous occasions and never found a difference. The only way I can tell for sure is when cleaning.

During the spawn I can tell but after what does it really matter?? They both are tasty!!!!!!!
