    Default Esterline , reel , rod ?

    I ordered a spool of Varivas ES2 Esterline Lemoni , in 1.75#.
I wanted the 2.3# , but they were out .
Im thinking of using a 5 or a 56 Daiwa Trout X XUL rod .
I thought about using it on the Iprimi XXUL . Or the Iprimi XUL .
    500 or 1000 reel ?
The spool is 80 meters . That 262 feet . Figure I could half that as most of my casts will probably be under 60 feet .
Ill be using backing on the reel , whether its a shallow spool 1000 reel or a 500 . Probably some SOS 2# line for backing .
I want to it with small plastics.
To tell you the truth , after buying the spool of Esterline , Im not sure why I bought it , except I like trying out new stuff . .

You will love or hate the line...me....I love it. Very few are in between on Ester lines. It can have manageability issues. It will surely test your skills as an UL angler due to the true 1.75# test. I have tried many Ester lines and the Varivas ES2 lines are the most user friendly I have used.

    Thanks Randy for your reply.
I ended up spooling half of the spool on a Shimano Nasci 500 with about four feet of 2# P-line as a leader .
    Right now it’s paired with a 6’ Daiwa Trout X XUL .
This should make a good outfit for the tiny green sunfish I catch jigging around the riprap at boat ramps.

When I first tried it, I hated it. The line would just uncoil off the reel, I took it off and threw it away, but I had 3 more spools. Months later I gave it another try and now I love it, the casting distant is unbelievable.
If you cast it they will come.

Randy and another person on crappie.com suggested adding tape arbor on the spool. I have used mono backing in the past. Its okay while spooling. But the ES2 ester is super thin and only 80 meters. So when you wind it on the spool with backing, the connection knot is visible as a bump. The visual aspect is not what bothers me. Its the issue that while casting the distance suffers because the line can gets caught on the connection bump.

I discussed this with Randy on DMs. His advice to add tape arbor to the spool instead of backing worked very well.

My experience with ester is less than a year. Not had any major issues with it. I make sure to stop the line before the lure hits the water with my index finger and close the bale with my hand. Before I start turning the handle I make sure that the line is tight and hasnt looped outside the spool.

1.75 lbs line will work just fine for bluegill, crappie, and even LMB (caught up to 15 inches).

When Using tape on the spool , I’ve run into an issue with glue residue making a sticky mess.
I’ve found if I hand wind the last foot of line backing before the knot at the very top of the spool and about a foot of the primary line , then finish spooling , it helps eliminate the line hanging up when casting.
I haven’t had a chance to try the Ester out yet . Too cold or wet last few days .
I might get out there today, if it weren’t for the wind , I’d be out there right now .

Interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing. We gotta wait out the winter. LOL!! I had been hitting one of the local ponds which was stocked with trout. But, its mostly fished out now.

Sad to see the fins worn off. But they put up a good fight on the Presso Air AGS 510 XUL. On this set up I used JDM braid - Daiwa Gekkabijin 3.9 lbs. I think 0.2 gou or lesser. The JDM UL PE lines are hair-like thin!! This line easily out casts its ester counterpart (0.4 or 0.3 gou). But its a challenge to tie a leader on outdoors when its windy and cloudy because its so thin.

Just trying to experiment and have some fun.

    Nice catch !
I’m experimenting with several lines at the moment. 2# P-line Floroclear, and 6# Daiwa J8 Grand braid with a Flouroclear leader .
I did make it to the town pond today for about an hour and a half.
I took my Daiwa Trout X 5’6” UL with a Daiwa Legalis LT 1000 spooled with the Daiwa braid . I like the braid so far . It casts great , increases sensitivity, and most of all , very manageable. No wind knots in two trips and I’d had some good wind to experiment with. Today was 9mph with gusts to 19 .
Too windy and cold to get the Ester out .

I have heard good things about the Daiwa braid you are using. Went out for a short while after work today but zero bites.

    Warmer days will come soon!

Might try to fish one of the Delayed Harvest steams tomorrow. ?
