    Default Float n Jig

Float and Jig or Float and fly fishing.
Is there a more relaxing way to fish jigs and flies ?
Great way to slow your presentation without the bottom hang ups .
This past week I tried to fish a drop shot rig at the big reservoir meet up with my fishing buddy .
I lost three rigs in three casts in three different locations.
It takes time to tie up a new rig , especially with cold fingers .
Solution, stick a float on your line .
Fish feed up most of the time anyway .
Windy ? That just adds action to your jig .
I’m rigging up a few 6’6” and 7 foot rods to use during the colder months .
I’ve found with some manufacturers, ultralight rods longer than six feet are whippy .
I usually move up to a light powered , fast action rod .
One of my favorites are St Croix 6’6” light rods and I have couple of 7’ older model Daiwa Procyon ultralights that fish like light powered rods .
What’s your favorite float n jig outfit ?
What depth do you set your float ?

I fish a float n fly about 80% of the time and like a 7' or longer rod. My favorite rod is a 7' Shimano Soare with a Shimano Stella 2000. I fish a 3/4" round weighted float from 2-6 foot deep with a 1/48 jig since anything bigger will sink the float. #2 rod is a G-LOOMIS 7' GL3 Mag light rod I've been using over 20 years paired with a Revo MGX 20. I fish it with a bigger weighted float and heavier jig. For really long casts I break out the 8.5' ST.CROIX 6WT. FLY ROD that was a blank and I had custom made into a spinning rod. Depending on wind conditions I can make casts close to 50 yards and reach those brush piles planted further out in the lakes I fish that others can't reach. No boats allowed in most of the lakes I fish, some days the long casts make a big difference.

I have a couple of 8 footers and one 9’ . The 9’ is a St Croix Triumph Salmon and Steelhead rod . It’s a light power , fast action . With 2# line and a 2” Mr crappie cigar float it’ll sling a 1/80 oz jig a long ways . Does pretty good with 4# .
Problem I have is the wind will wrap the jig around the float sometimes. I’ve found using a 1/64 or heavier jig helps some , but I like the slow fall of the 1/80 jig .
I noticed I didn’t have the problem as much when using plastics , probably because of the extra weight the plastic body adds .
I enjoyed fishing with my 7’ UL Daiwa Procyon today .
I’m planning on taking a 6’6” St Croix Triumph Light tomorrow if the weather permits.
My largest fish on float n jig was a nice LM of about five pounds that bit a tiny black 1/80 woolybooger jig , using 4# test .

I use an 8ft Okuma Guide Pro spin rod for float fishing with Berkeley X9 braid and FC leader. Getting ready to tie up some 1/20oz balanced jigs for trout and might tie up some midges as well. For floats I like the ones sold by Cleardrift and recently bought some wobble bobbers by Thill.

One thing for sure you have to be quick on the hookset when a trout grabs your jig.

I grew to love it fishing rocky creek bottoms. Get the depth and drift figured out and hang on!

In the waters I fish, I set the depth to 3 ft. in warm water and 5 ft. in colder water. Great way to catch bluegill and crappie in all but the very coldest of winters in my experience. Don't know why, but even when most of the fish are schooled up in deep water there always seems to be a few feeding near the surface all year long. Color very often matters, but I usually will start with white in clearer water, which is often the case in winter. If the water is stained or muddy I'll go with black or a very bright color like chartreuse, yellow, pink, or orange. Not usually much going on in cold dark water though - works much better for me when I can see the jig to 4 feet deep or more.
