    Default Monofilament Line Thickness Comparison

Monofilament line diameter comparison chart I came up with. Apparent the U.S. line weights are not in line with their actual line diameters like the Japanese and European line companies. If you think you are fishing 2# line you are actually fishing with 4# in regards to the line diameter. HmmmmmName: JDM Lines.jpg

US market line ratings are a joke. Been preaching this for years.

Guys the breaking strength of the line and it's thickness are totally different things. You can have 8 lbs line as thick as your finger, or you can have 8 lbs line thinner than a strand of human hair. It all depends on how the company engineered the line. The parameters are determined by the company.

Case and point: Fly fishermen use a variety of tippets of varying thicknesses and breaking strengths. That's why they have the X system in addition to the line thickness and breaking strength. There are far more factors than the breaking strength.

The point is US market lines...the overwhelming majority...with a few exceptions...do not break at their rated strength. I could list many 2 pound lines that are sold as 2 pounds yet break at 3-4 pounds. I could do same with 4..6...8...and on up the line. Very few folks realize this. Here is a good article that talks about this and how it might have come to be this way.

Yeah, but we’re not talking about fly fishing. LOL

First, the “X” system is completely outdated. Many (including me) would like to see it go away. The only reason people still use it is because of tradition.

Second, different tippets are used for different size flies because you need to transfer the energy from the fly line through the leader to the fly. We’re talking about UL baits of a similar size. You can cast most UL baits with almost any 2-4# line.

Third, most tippet is different from regular mono/fluoro because it has almost no stretch and will break more easily than regular line in the same breaking strain. Slab posted a thread about a new line that had a lot of stretch in it. Tippet is the exact opposite of that.
