    Default JDM Jig Discussion

I'm starting to run low on 1.5g Daiwa jig heads. Since the days of these Diawa jig heads (the black ones) seem to be closing, what is the current recommendation? Is it the Decoy Aji Drive hooks? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

About three months ago Randy put out a good You Tube video discussing JDM jigheads, I do not know how to link it here with the iPhone but it was pretty comprehensive. I have many of the jig heads he discussed and can get some pics of them individually and post here later this evening. A few of the jig heads he discussed are actually in stock and can be found on Japanese Tackle websites and Amazon Japan but shipping has gotten ridiculous since Covid shutdowns and re opening. I have Magbite, Issei, Cultiva, ODZ, Decoy, and Tict. Randy reported on a Gamakatsu that I don’t have. All are good quality heads, some like the Decoy have a micro barb and can cause some loss of fish. Check out his video and I will try to get some quick pics up tonight.

The hook on this Gamakatsu is outstanding. The only problem for me is the smallest hook size is #6. In my opinion this hook is as good as the Daiwa we have been using. I just wish it came in smaller sizes.

Sorry I did get this picture up last night, but here are some of the alternatives to the Daiwa Gekajibin jig heads that we all should have bought up before Randy got them. Here are a few observations about each one, you can ask for more details and if I have any more insight I will certainly share or others can pipe in with their opinions. Starting top left the Issei is an awesome jighead on the Nikko worm and pretty good on the Trout Magnet. At 1.25g it casts like a bullet. Next to it the Deps/Reins jighead is a great head for the BGBS full size plastic Crappie baits. Sharp hook and a good action on cast and retrieve. The two Decoy heads are nickel plated and shiny. They have a micro barb and Randy has video evidence of him losing fish while using these jigheads. I personally have not had a problem with losing fish, they do bend easily and they do have a plastic keeper on the hook. If you watch Ifish on You Tube he likes these hooks and does many video reviews of JDM jigheads. I would not hesitate to use them as I have a few packs. Second row start on the left are the ODZ jigheads, super sharp fine wire hook. These will stick you quick like the Gekajibin. The Rush head and Trout Magnet pair nicely and the Range Cross with a stinger style bait like the BGBS impart a great twitching jigging action. I used one on Friday and stuck some nice Specks. The Ecogear head is next and while it has a sharp hook, the head/lead material seems light for the weight it is advertised. Now I work in a Science Laboratory and have electronic digital scales that will weigh out to .0001 of a gram, and I can never remember to take these in to actually weigh them. When dock shooting I will use this head as it seems lighter and falls a little different than a round head jig. The fall is mostly what gets a fish to strike when he is hiding under the dock. I have two versions of the Aji Killer by Magbite, and I think Randy covered that well in his video. They make a Strong wire and Light wire version. I like both, use both and would recommend both for Crappie sticking! And finally on the bottom is the Cultiva Mushi head I think it’s called. It has a small plastic keeper and is crazy sharp. Ifish calls this jighead the Boogill Killer (said in his opinionated Bulgarian accent). It casts like a bullet and will certainly bring in the Gills. I fish this head from the bank on TM and small buggy creatures, they really don’t stand a chance with JDM braid strung up on high carbon content rods and featherlite reels. If it nibbles the Mushi head it’s caught. This is a little long winded I know but this great site is for reference as well as entertainment of our hobbies. As always Your Mileage May Vary, I am not sponsored by or endorsed by any of these companies or products, I just like to catch fish!

Really nice write up Stan! I’ve had some experience with most of those. I can tell you one thing…. These Japanese jigheads sure are sharp!

Great write up. All of the JDM jig heads I have tried have all been very good. When I came upon the Daiwa I quit looking. They just stood out to me. But now that they are going by the way I will eventually need to find another one that to me stands out. The ODZ are good and who knows, soon we may have more in the system to try.

Does anyone paint their unfinished jig heads black? What have you found to be the best paint/powder paint?
