Default Trying new direction in UL.

Never set rid of my UL spinning gear, love the stuff. But I've got a rod here, casting rod, Ocuma Celilo. 7' line recommebded is 2-7 pounds! Luers 1/8th oz to 1/2oz. Right now I have a Daiwa low profile reel on it with 6# test line. But I just ordered a ne low profile Kastking I'm gonna put on the rod and try 2# line if I can find some if not, 4#. I never really cared for the low profile reels much, kinda like having a VW bug and not a use one for it. Well I love my round level winds and my smallest is a ABU 2500 but next to these small low profile level winds it looks like a crane! I'm hoping it might actually cast 1/8th oz jijs, with 2# line this might be handy as a small mouth bass set up. Now I don't really fish for bass that much, they are in the water I fish for cats and crappies in. But now and then I do get a bass on a UL crappie rod, it's a hoot! Actually probably won't get it much use though, Like my UL spinning for crappie and my round level winds for cats. But bottom line is it sound like a pretty good reason to get a new rod and reel. That Ocuma rod with the Daiwa reel I set up with a slip bobber and jig head for using night crawler's to fool for bass with and so far it hasn't made it to the river with me. I like bass but cats eat better! Little UL casting set like this might even work pretty well with a 1/4oz egg sinker using power bait for trout. Seldom ever fish for trout anymore but maybe this would be a good reason!

Speaking of the sslip bobber, while I was in Germany our rod and Gun Club had a lake with trout and a really small stream leaving it. Used my 308 over there on my Garcia 3206 rod . Put on a bobberand hung a baited hook about 6" below it and sent it down that stream in front of me. Wow, death on the trout. For what ever reason I've never tried that again. Probably because here in Oregon we have mostly planter trout, they run maybe 8" and the limit is 5! Fished for them here about 20yrs ago and just threw everything back. Three hours to the lake I went to, caught my five planters in about four min and it was either throw them back or go home! I've used my UL spinning rods years ago in Long Island sound fishing for flounder and snapper. Thinking this little UL bait caster would be cool there too!

Default Trying new direction in UL.

I always used baitcasting tackle for bass, and ultralight meant spinning tackle. That’s how it was in the ‘70s when I started fishing. But you have a great plan! UL baitcasting sounds like too much fun. I’’’m going to give it a try myself this summer!

Hey John. Waiting on my new reel I went to town today to look for a new rod. Lightest rod I could find was a 6' Ugly Stick rated for 6-12 pound line. Figured I'd try it. Brought it home and put that little Daiwa on it. 6# line, 1 1/4" round cork bobber and 1/8th oz jig. put the Daiwa on it and took it outside, cast's like a dream. This would work well for blue gills! Can't wait to get the new reel. It'll go on the Ocuma rod. For it I'll put on a 1" round cork slip float and might even try down to 1/16 oz jig. Couldn't find 2# line but did get a spool of 4#. Might have some 2# left from loading my little Ocuma UL reel! yea but only maybe 150yds, probably not enough! Waiting to get the truck license on and have the canoe on the truck. About time for a trip to Prineville Res and check out the crappie! Water to low to drag the boat that far just to find out I can't launch. Goin to the river tonight to try for some cats. Might go early and check out the small mouth's with this new UL casting rig. Finally found a use for a low profile casting reel maybe!

If you try this this summer, the little Daiwa is an RG. Got it about a year ago for something like $40 at the Bi Mart. The Ugly stick I just put it on was $38 at the Walmart. Found the cork float's at the Bi Mart too.

A properly functioning 2500 will cast 1/8 oz lures, with care and the right rod. I've modified mine and it's good down to 1/16 oz. Any of the BFS reels, even cheap $50 units from Alibaba will cast 1/32 oz lures.

    I have a 2500 and a 1500. I've tricked out the 2500. The 1500 is stock.

I've never even given a though to trying the 2500 with light stuff. Got the Kastking in the mail today and took id down and tried it out. Works fine with a bobber but you can cast a 1/8th oz jig but need to be careful. Nice looking reel and very smooth. Got three small mouths with it. Seems the Dalwa handled better but them they are on two different rods Maybe this next week swap rods and try again. The Daiwa in on a med action but rated line is 6-12#. The kastking is on the Ocuma UL casting rod. UL action rated for 2-8# line. Both reels seem to be rated for 12# on the low end. Something about the kastking tonight, with 1/8th oz jig's and no bobber it was much easier to cast side arm. Thinking the UK rod action is to slow for just the jig alone. But was fine with the jig and slip bobber. terrible time keeping moss off the jig, river is really low right now.

Read where Kastking has a reel they developed for light line. $66 and I just might try one. But with a bobber this one I have will work fine!
