It means it is not meant to boat lift fish, you should use a net, and “slinging” is just that - bring a fish up and use the rod to sling the fish up on a dock, land or whatever. Long story short, don’t stress the rod on something it wasn’t designed to do. Hope this helps.

A little smoother. More machined aluminum anodized parts. EVA foam handles. Just feels more solid and better put together. I have 3 C-10s and a 6920 President. The C-20 is probably a more direct comparison to the 6920.

I have them on jig rods and one 8' spinning rod.

If this is an attempt at talking some sense into JDM fans, you're setting yourself up for failure!

I have as my high end reels an exist, a stella and a Presso 18 that i think was the last one in japan when I bought it on the advice of Alphahawk. The Presso is on a level unlike any reel I've ever fished and I do not baby my equipment. I can not imagine going backwords at this point. Never convince me there is not a difference. If you haven't fished with one of the high end reels it would be hard to compare and before I went down this road I've caught thousands of mfish on Plugers and other American made reels but for me it was worth every penny and I would not give it up wiilingly for any price. Granted it's not for everyone but I'm a happy fisherman. Scott

Ok, Scott, I'll bite. You say the high end is so good that you won't go back. That's a strong statement. What is it that's so good, so different? All ears to anyone that can expand on this.

I have an Abu Garcia Theta 1000 coming in, looking forward to seeing if it's an improvement over, say, a Pfleuger President. I mean, so, I am catching big bluegill each day and usually, fishing for BG, catch a couple of bass. Two bass yesterday were 3 lbs each. A bass a couple weeks ago was 5 lbs. (I weighed them.) On the bass, the drag activated and worked as it should. On the bluegill, which is 95% of the catch, the drag usually does not get activated using 4-lb test line. I let the fish run because I enjoy that, so, I pump the rod high every so often, reel a little in and let it run again. A few times, and the fish is at the boat. I'm trying to envision what a high end reel could do to improve over the President. I'll know more when the Theta arrives! As for the Presso, yep, that's another step way higher.

I have plenty of fun with a President and a B 'n' M Sam Heaton 9 ft rod; the main reason I am trying higher end JDM gear is so that I can cast 1/64 oz farther. If I don't find JDM gear that can do that, hmmm...

To cast farther, 2-lb test line is supposed to help and I continue to try line lighter than 4-lb test (2-lb and 3-lb) and each time I try it, I don't like it. Including yesterday, when I lost two lures to a snag. With 4-lb test, I can often just bend the hook by pulling on the line. And the 2-lb is just so hard to handle! But I will try again.

As for the real light line, if I fished open water, that would be better.

I know I'm not going to do a good job explaining what it means to me for one I'm a poor typer but could talk you ear off about the " magical " feel of the Presso on the end of the eradicator slow taper special and what an unbelivable combination that is. For starters I would say it appears that durabilty without matineance as I'm NOT the kind of guy that can take reels apart and clean and service them as they probaly need to be and too lazy to send them off somewhere and wait 2 months to get them back nor the couple of times that I did do that have a very good expierance. I've had the Presso for 3 years and for those that know me I'm blessed to live on a lake and work from home which allows me to fish for 2-3 hrs in the evenings 360 day's a year meaning my equipment get's used a lot. 3 year's in the Presso is as smooth as the day it came out of the box. Using 2# gamma and often throwing a .5 gram Gekibin jig head I can cast effortlessly small jigs and the low inertia and smoothness of the reel combined with the sensitivity of the slow taper special is just " magical " . I don't break off on fish very often and have had some unbelivable fights recently with a 5 lb. spotted bass ( Kentucky ) that took every bit of 15 to 20 minutes to land but land I did. I'll say again I know it's not for everyone but for me it gives me a fun factor that's off the charts. Scott

If you're using domestic 2-4 lbs lines, you will want to look into JDM lines to help accomplishing your goal of casting farther. I'd suggest ester lines, but you already dislike 2 lbs mono (I assume it is not ester), so I'll reserve that suggestion. I'd also suggest 0.1-0.2 PE lines, but handling them will only get more difficult than 2 lbs mono. With that said, if you try Gosen Light Game 4 in 0.15 PE or even XBraid Upgrade in 0.2 PE (both are much thinner than Varivas and Sunline PE lines in similar sizes), I think you will be amazed at the casting distance and sensitivity. Keep in mind that many JDM UL rods were designed for PE lines, not mono, especially mebaru rods. One look at the running guides will tell you everything.

Looking for more suggestions on high quality JDM (or high quality ultralight) type reels for, say, $350 USD or less. Other than the Theta. I will buy another Theta if that is all I can find in stock, but I would prefer to improve my JDM experience and experiment by purchasing a different reel. TIA!

BTW, my Theta came in really fast from Japan, I was surprised. And it was packaged well. I bought it at fishingshop.kiwi site.
