    Default Foul hooking fish

I've been throwing the Crappie Magnet at the crappie here on Lake Barkley. Yesterday I foul hooked a 10lb drum in the dorsal fin and today I foul hooked a really nice crappie right in the gut. I'm using #4 & #2 size jigs with Crappie Magnets.

    What causes this?

It happens sometimes. You're now using the more sensitive rods, so you're feeling "bites" sooner.

David Fritts, the pro bass angler, liked to use fiberglass rods for crankbait fishing because they were not as sensitive as graphite. Therefore, the bass took the bait a little deeper before he felt the bite and set the hook.

doesn't bode well for catch-and-release approach

No doubt true. These could be sideswipe hits that you wouldn’t normally feel, and those super sharp hooks do the rest.

On what DBD said, I believe that most pros use a more parabolic rod for their crank baits these days, longer too.
