Default Impression of Tenryu Rayz Spectra

Even though the flow was low at Normandy I really wanted to catch some fish with the Spectra. I made a few cast with the less expensive Trout Magnet crank and it was plain to see that was not going to work....3rd cast and gave one up to the bottom. I tied on a Bison colored Trout Magnet....using the 3# test Troutist Area Meister line....and proceeded to catch over 30 stocker trout. Even though I had no large fish I got a sense of the behaviour of the rod. It is rated as LL...light, light. Using the nylon line you realize handling larger trout is not a problem for this rod. While sensitivity is certainly not on par with ajing....mebaru...and area trout rods it is more sensitive than I thought it would be. I could feel the tic as soon as a trout nipped at the Trout Magnet. I bought this rod exclusively for trout fishing on streams using cranks...spoons and spinners. It is plain to see it will shine in that area. Sooner or later they will let out more water at Normandy...there will be shad kills...so I am hoping to get in some good cranking with it when all that happens. Meanwhile I may still use it on low flow with a Trout Magnet. This past week they released about 150 brood trout in the 18-23 inch range. I have hooked into them before over there with area trout rods and it did not always go well. In the sunlight the deep purple color of the blank really pops...and the reel seat is just a thing of beauty. I did get a video of this trip...those interested will get to see some bending curve on 10 inch trout. I never thought I would purchase a stream trout rod. If my back issues continue to improve at the rate it has, and I can really get around on the river banks, I will purchase another one. Yesterday in the spot I was fishing I was thinking how nice it would have been to have the 5' 1" LL version of this rod....LOL. The JDM journey continues.

I have the 5’1” and I really enjoy it for playing around with trout in the mountains... It splits time with my 6’1” Corto... Tenyru makes a great rod and I hope you get into some of the bigger ones soon!

Nice fish on the new rod. Anxious to see you stick a trout on a crank with it. I will check out the new video. I assume the stream rod has more backbone up through the tip, a less parabolic bend to keep the fisherman in more control of the trout in the current?

Fun fishing, but where is the power bait crowd? When they stock trout here in Missouri anglers are shoulder to shoulder even with Covid keeping everything until they are fished out, usually in a couple days. I never keep them but trout fishing here looks nothing like the area you fish which is good for you.

Same here in urban SoCal. It has always been better to wait until all the easy fish is gone.

Smaller creeks around me get fished out really fast... seems like the bigger creeks/ smaller rivers keep more hold overs... a lot more seams and pockets that people don’t fish etc that hold fish... in Virginia they update the trout stocking every evening at 4pm but there are always some that follow the stock truck... if it is a smaller mountain stream that you can jump across they will get most of them picked off before the weekend comes... frustrating but part of it I guess...

I've been dreaming about this Tenryu since I first discovered it about a year ago. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Randy. I'm going to go watch your video a few times now. Sometime this year I'm going to get one of these!
