Default Kayak Trip Report, Limestone Bay/Creek

I fished Limestone today, it was slow, but I found a few. I kept 16 and returned another dozen short fish. All came from a jig and bobber using a Pink and Chartreuse Tube. The water was cloudy with visibility of about 10 to 12 inches and 50 degrees at daylight. It only warmed a degree or two by lunch time. Small gills and bass were everywhere. Largest Bass was around four pounds. I also caught and released my first Chain Pickerel from Limestone, 14 or 15 inches long. I've caught a few in other areas, just not Limestone. The water is down about four to five feet so some dragging to get in, but just enough water to paddle my kayak into and back out of the two larger pits.

Good looking mess DB. That cold front yesterday was going to make it tough for sure. Congrats

Half of these would have normally gone back as larger fish, but I try to keep a coworkers elderly parents in fish. Every single Crappie I caught yesterday was a Black. We're still months aways from the Crappie moving shallow in any numbers. Still a beautiful, quiet day on the water.

I've caught 10- 1 blacks this season. Gotta love it. If I can find my heavy rain jacket and wool lined boots I'm gonna fish some this week.

Cotaco Creek has been 50/50 for me. If the water ever clears up, I'm normally in Indian Creek heavy this time of year. It's usually 50/50 Black/White also. The upper end of Limestone has always been Black Crappie heavy except for maybe a few weeks during the height of the spawn. We're lucky that the peak of the spawn is a couple weeks different between Black and White Crappie. If one doesn't have a good spawn due to a late cold front, then the other still usually does. I grew up fishing farm ponds and smaller lakes in Texas where the Crappie spawn was always boom or bust with a good spawn only every three to five years. I feel very spoiled with the consistency on Lake Wheeler!

Biggest one I caught Friday was a white. A little over 13 inches. The other few were black. Wish a hadn’t broke my casting rod right off the bat. Lol
