Great report. Were the big buffalo still stirring up the mud? The 1 crappie i caught when i went was where the split is on the right hand side. I came up the other side and drug over the rock road and caught 1 bass in the Lilly pads. Were most of the crappie on the lower end or scattered through out? Just trying to figure out the area. The half mile walk to and from is Rough. Thanks

Crappie were scattered throughout. I hooked a couple big carp or buffalo, got one boat side in the 30-pound range, LOL. I was just trying to save the jig but got drowned in water for the trouble when he made a last run, and he broke off anyway.

I hung several buffalo. I hate them. I also try to get my jig but after i broke a rod I started just cutting the line. Had a few just take off like 40 yards. When I tried to retie I didn’t have enough line to reach my rod tip. Lot of work!

    Advice to others.

Many of the shallow sloughs along the Tennessee River (and other creeks and rivers) hold Crappie year-round. They're typically shallow 6 feet or less) and often muddy from carp and buffalo. Warm and muddy water mean low oxygen, but if there are baitfish there will be Crappie. The best tactic I've found is spider rigging and covering lots of water. Daylight is magical in the summer. You'll often see the baitfish schools on the surface and being fed on by Crappie, Bass, Stripe and gar. In a 50 acre slough you'll quickly be able to see where the baitfish are concentrated. After daylight the fish will often move to the bottom but continue to feed. These are the areas where I concentrate my search.

If it holds two feet of water year-round there are catchable fish. If there's deeper water within a hundred yards the fish will move there, but if they have to move further many fish will stay as long as there's adequate food.

I'll start checking the fall pattern next week. Check in with my fishing buddy in Limestone. Indian Creek may have a few at the mouth. Still early, but maybe I can find a few that have come up a little early.

I fished Indian yesterday. Caught a couple small ones close to the mouth. Fished all the way back and not a bite. Caught a few there last week and was hoping they may have moved in more. Those 95 degree days probably didn’t help.

10-day forecast is showing every night in the 50's, daytime highs in the mid 70's to low 80's. By next week the water in Limestone and the creeks should start to only reach the mid to upper 70's in the afternoon. That should start to bring in the baitfish and the Crappie. Not a big move, but it should start. We also have the advantage of Wheeler dropping. We're down a foot and a half now, two feet by next week. That starts to reduce the available shoreline cover and also helps to concentrate the fish.

I went to limestone saturday and found the water only 8-10 inches down and dingy with massive amounts of baitfish and gar especially in the gravel pits...caught one crappie that may have been a keeper..only fished a couple of hours due to having trouble with my outboard.....I think my tank has bad gas in it..water in the fuel filter.....had to troll back across the bay... cant wait for the water drop further...
