I know it's not the best time to get on a quest for crappie but I've been really struggling to catch a few. I fish from kayak right now but I've tried several spots and havnt had any luck. This week I tried new city lake Moulton. Saw fish on sonar around grass in 10-15 feet but couldnt get a bite. Tried different types and colors jigs even little spinners no luck. I'm in nw Alabama but would travel a bit to catch some. Any ideas or tips greatly appreciated.

I’ve never had much luck this time of year. I’m just kinda waiting for fall.

Lol I'm not up to 15 yet but I'm sadly getting there. Leave it to me to get catching crappie on my mind at the very wrong time of year. I do see posts on fb where folks are still catching slabs on Pickwick but I'm totally unfamiliar with Pickwick no idea where to even begin.

In my opinion, July and August is the best time to crappie fish for numbers. Your Alabama crappie will be doing the same thing as my Ohio crappie this time of year. Go on your gps/sonar and look for the shallow mid-lake humps. That's where all the crappie are congregated this time of year. We did 110 last Saturday, 160 the Sat before, 151 the Saturday before, 189 the weekend before that and on and on.
They start migrating from the shorelines after the spawn which is the end of May in Ohio.
They migrate out to the mid-lake hump and after July 1st, it's on!
We anchor on our spot right before sunrise and don't move till we leave or want to go swimming to cool off. We are in the middle and watch all the boats pounding the shoreline and trees like it's April. Fools I tell you.

Our main spot is in 12.5' fow and now it a bit less than 10 fow with the water being down. Surrounding area are 15-20 fow. Forget the shoreline and get out in the middle humps!

I've been shore fishing after work 5X in the last week and all I have to show for it is 3 bass. I caught 4 bass, a dozen perch, gills, 4 channel cats and 110 crappie from the boat on Saturday.

I have found that if you find them you can catch crazy numbers this time of year. I’m just not good at finding them.

I agree. We can catch monster crappie in the winter on the Ohio River when they are in the shallow marinas. Once summer comes, they disappear somewhere out on the main river. Where? Who knows. We have never been able to find them.

On lakes however, it's not too hard to find them when you have a Garmin (or LR or Hbird) with gps and contour lines.

They are out in the middle of the lake on the humps. I'm telling you.
