Be thankful for two or three better then zero.
I always hear about crappie stacking up and people catching a hundred or more in one area. I’ve been told a couple places where this was the case and have tried finding them like that. Even where someone else has found and caught them like that I only catch 2or3. Move on and catch 2or3 in other spots. Quiet often when I come back through I can catch a couple more in some of those same places and that’s it. Am I doing something wrong or have they possibly just scattered when I get to go??Still learning my fish finder so that may help some.
I seldom find numbers on a single piece of cover, but more often in a small area like a 100 foot area of bank or creek drop off. The exception is late fall or winter when the water cools. I of course typically fish very shallow, the deep water guys find Crappie schools all summer.

I believe the most I had caught was 60 and that was set up in fall at a choke point for most of the night. They would come through in waves and then be gone again chasing shad

I often see trees/brush piles with 50 or more fish.
Like you said catch a few, then offer them a diiferent color/size/profile.
I’d guess 20’s the most I’ve caught, off of a brush pile.

Maybe again I’ve misunderstood what I’ve read. Lol. I did find a spot a few weeks ago where it dropped almost strait from 5 to 16 feet. I caught over 40 there but only 3 or 4 keepers.

If I catch more than 3-4 fish off of one spot I’m ecstatic, and if I ever lose one at the boat it seems to shut them down.

I rarely catch a hundred off a shallow spot. Now deeper spots I've caught over a hundred many times. Your probably not doing anything wrong, just timing. Like DB said fall is probably the best time for this to happen. Also seems like some lakes are different and they just don't get in big groups. Deep clear lakes tend to have the big schools in my experience.
