    Default Lilly pads

There was a place we fished when I was a kid. It’s just a slough off of flats far from the river. Then you could fish from the bank but it has been too grown up for years. There was a patch of pads maybe 10 by 20. My grandma would sit there in her lawn chair with a cane pole and minnows and fill a 5 gallon bucket with crappie. That was almost 40 years ago but I’ve been thinking about giving it a try in my kayak. My question is do any of y’all fish Lilly pads this time of year?

I personally don’t because I spider rig 95% of the time. I know an older fellow that used to smoke the crappie in the Lilly pad stems around hwy 67 in flint. Might be worth a try.

Crappie will spawn on lily pad stems ! and their are good chances that they are some stumps up n those stems ! I’d start on the outer edge and work up into em slowing using a long pole and dipping em like a tree or drop a lite float into them !

Man back in the day before TVA killed all the pads in flint we would limit out with a cane pole on a boat drifting through the pads. Usually this time of year they wouldn’t be bloomed to the top just a bunch of branches under the surface. I hate that they sprayed and killed them all. Made for some fun bass fishing too. It totally ruined the fishing and the fish population in that area. Really dumb that they kill natural habitat as a “maintenance” for there NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS. pray for the world

    Would you use minnows?

If I had too I would ! But a tube jig or a baby shad ought to work great I’d start with a 1/32nd jig on a long pole and would ease it down into the holes around/in the pads keeping the line tight ease it down on the fall and the rise and be ready for the bite have had then hit it going down and when coming up !
it’s hard to beat a black/chartreuse, red /chartreuse , purple / chartreuse,green/chartreuse tube jig during this time of year ! Especially when fishing vertical ! Or under a cork

Gotcha. I don’t really like using minnows so that’s good. Thanks.

When I was a kid all I wanted to do was catfish. My grandmother just liked to fish. We’d leave out and just go to random places my granddaddy could think of. We went to this place and I threw liver out and was baiting another one and there goes my rod in the water. My granddaddy got my grandmas cane pole with a bare hook trying to hook my rod. I’ll never forget he said hey hey looka here. He had a big slab off that bare hook coming through those pads. My grandma said the rest of the day I’ll have me some minners next time. And there’s no telling how many crappie she caught there over the next few years.
