Scary!!
It's going to take a lot more than a lil ole gator to keep me from fishing.
I see them pretty regularly at wheeler. I've had a couple of big ones go under my kayak and canoe. No big deal. I'd advise against cornering them back up in a little slough like that guy did though. Their exit will get a bit more forceful when you do that.

See them daily when fishing in delta down here. And you need to give them their space. If I see one I generally move through his area like the guy did on the video after the fact. There like a snake never back them in a corner as most of the time they will win. They been living in the water longer than we have! But one thing for sure I bet that guy used his gator repellent and had to wash out his kayak. Good video of what can happen and those of us who does fish out of one always be aware of your surroundings. I have been known to be to focused on the fish and get right up on them before. I can tell you their breath stinks.

Well the one I got within arms length of back some 20 years ago while setting a trot line at dusk dark one afternoon. It was fishy smelling. So you make the call. But that was right as the jet skis got really bad. But I have no intentions of finding out again.
But I will say it almost made me use my natural repellent we have all been equipped with. Ha.

I mostly Bass fish Wheeler. I saw a good one at Blackwell Swamp this year.
A quick story not Alabama related.....I went to South Florida last year and brought my Kayaks. I was hellbent on fishing the Everglades from my kayak. My buddy told me where he recommended launching and I got after it. I could see about a 4 footer as I was launching in the shallows about 50 yards away and got a little unnerved but I figured as long as I could see him I was fine. I told myself if I got uncomfortable at all I was done and would leave.
After about 20 minutes of Bass fishing I decided to paddle to another area of the water so I put my pole in the rod holder and started paddling at a pretty good clip. Mid stroke moving pretty good in front of me at 20 yards the biggest alligator I've ever seen surfaced directly in my path perpendicular to my kayak and I'm headed straight into him. Don't ask me why but I grabbed my phone and tried to get a picture first then realized I was coasting right into him and did the sloppiest U turn of my life almost flipping myself. He went under before I coasted over where he was and I got my ass out of that body of water. I spent the rest of the day fishing the canals from the bank and saw countless gators. I was catching Bass and Mayan Cichlids. The game warden came by and chatted with me about the kayaks on top of my car and I told her where I put in and what had happened.....her reply " yeah, people don't really do that here. Trip of a lifetime though lol
