    Default Honeycomb Area At G’Ville

Wondered if anyone has fished the docks in the area north of the boat ramp this time of year and had luck? I know the bridge holds fish, but my wife and I are going to be getting a weekend free of the kids in a cottage there off Honeycomb Rd and may be able to borrow a kayak to use during our stay. Is the water drawn down low this time of year?

I dont know about the docks but at the moment but TVA instead of its usual draw down , has been trying to drain the lake this year and it stood at an all time low last Saturday at least from where i usually fish. It is at least down 3 ft based on rocks that i usually see under water , I now set on as a chair or I can stand in front of them and not get my boots wet.

They are probably trying to kill some aquatic vegetation. They have done this in the past

As to the vegetation, they (TVA) have done a number on the hydrilla and milfoil over the years along with the independent boat house owners who poisoned it themselves, unfortunately someone sprigged the lake either on purpose or by accident, although i vote that it was done by the green trout horde, with ribbon or eel grass. it is worse in my opinion than milfoil ever was to try and fish around and in as a single strand of it will fold on your line and cause you to lose your depth. My bass buddies love it because it grows deeper than the hydrilla and mil foil does . After a big wind had been blowing on the lake it breaks off in a million strands and depending on where it drifts or blows will basically shut you down if you are at the wrong causeway or bridge from the bank. TVA has traditionally drawn the lake down to kill some grass but it never got this low that i can remember ,maybe way back in the early 80's when we went thru 3 years of drought. They have kept 8 to 12 gates running below Guntersville almost all late fall and winter. Even as I type this they have a few still open although its under 10 now.

I'm with you on that el grass. It ruins long lining if its around. It blows loose and stupid coots pull it up. I wondered how it got in there. I figured birds did it. Makes sense that the green carp fisherman did it. If they did someone ought to find out witch ones did it and plant kudzu in their yards. Maybe they are overly concerned about flooding they had last year and are trying to keep the lakes low just in case. I know it looked low when I came home down 72 last week and crossed the comer bridge. Weiss is lower than normal too. Communist plot I'm sure

I fished the boat houses last weekend at Honeycomb and didn’t have any luck. Went over on the east side and caught crappie and bass. Both in shallow water. I am hoping to go back this weekend myself and try the same boat houses.

I know many bass guys that even hate the eel grass.

Whomever is responsible for the eel grass should have a hit put out on 'em.

We do some work on the boats and trailers for TVA. I’ve talked to their biologists several times and believe me, I fill their ears full about eelgrass. Here’s the deal though. It’s a native grass and has been in the river for ever. They said it use to be isolated to a few ledges upriver, above Scottsboro and a couple of ledges between Guntersville and Scottsboro and that it was isolated to growing very near the river channel and would not grow anywhere else, especially in backwater areas. Then something changed and it grows everywhere now. And as we all know it dang sure is everywhere. They have no idea what changed or why it started growing all over the place.

IM gonna throw the flag on theTVA biologist, probably the same one that told me that salt water stripe were not able to spawn below gville dam,I been all over the big G since I was too young to fish with my dad till now 65 years late and until about 10 years ago never seen a sprig of it,now its even growing below guntersville dam on the sand bar, seems to grow the same places Milfoil and hydrilla does and places where it never did. Maybe it took this long for all the fertilizer that runs into the plae to make it grow.........................
