Kayak Trip Report, Cotaco Creek

I put in at Sharps Ford at daylight and fished all day. Humbling day to say the least, kept 11 and returned 4 over 12 inches. I probably put back 3 dozen short Crappie. The most I caught off any one laydown was a single and most nothing. I think a shook a jig at every laydown for 2 miles upstream and down stream of the bridge. The few that I got to bite were all deep, 6 to 8 feet down in at least 10 feet of water caught single pole jigging and no Crappie casting.

The water was clear with visibility of 12 to 18 inches, 58 degrees and bank full.

Next trip is back to Limestone, I know how to catch those fish, LOL!

Bob D, they need to drop the water. The amount coming down the river has Cotaco Summer Pool full. I like it much better when it's 4 to 5 feet lower.

I went this morning (0600-0900) and fished near the mouth of the river. Water is 2-3ft higher than last week. Water temp was 62-63. I kept 6 today. Caught about 20, mostly shorts. They were about 8 feet deep today. Maybe I'll follow you to Limestone for next trip.

Glad you was able to get out! I’m sure the lake is high because they have the bottom sucked out of Guntersville!
Been running 4-6 flood gates for well over a week that I know of!

Strange thing I've notice since moving to the Tennessee Valley. With high flows the main lake areas may be low, but the narrower river sections will actually be higher than normal. That's the reason Cataco Creek is high, but the wider main lake areas of Wheeler near the dam are actually a couple feet low. I bet if you go upstream on Guntersville you'll find much higher water. I'll be glad when things get back to normal. My favorite time to fish is during the fall when Wheeler drops four or five feet, the water clears up in the sloughs and creeks and the water temperate gets into the low 60's and upper 50's. I have a feeling by the time that happens I'll be buried in work or travelling again.

When I first started to frequent this site I would read people to say that the creek they fished was up. Then I would drive by Big Creek at Sportsman Park and it would be bone dry. At first I would be like what the heck water should be flat on Wheeler. They gotta be crazy. Finally learned about restrictions at the mouth of creeks like Limestone Cotaco and Flint
