Default Trip Report, Cummings Research Park

My wife wanted to take a few pictures around the pond by the AdTran building so I went to make a few cast in the pond. I took my ultralight and little box of 1" sliders. I caught 3 bass, but over 30 Crappie. I saw a bobber broke off about 50 feet off the bank. It ended up being hung on some brush and I pulled one Crappie after another from it. 5 or 6 would have kept, the rest were only 4 to 6 inches, but sure was fun, LOL! I left them biting since it was only a 45 minute trip.

Catching and no cleaning is always a blast. Care to share some of wife's pictures?

Had no idea you could fish there. Is it by permit or just open to whoever?

It's owned or at least controlled by the City of Huntsville. I haven't heard of any issues with bank fishing nor are there no trespassing / fishing signs. Typically you'll see a few people, especially on weekends. Great place to take the kids with some worms and bobber for a couple hours on the weekend and many do! There's also a few hardcore Green Carp guys that I've ran into. One told me he caught an 9 pound Largemouth Bass a couple years ago and a different guy showed me pictures of several 2 pound Crappie he's caught.

My wife likes to walk in the afternoons, but with COVID was looking for somewhere less crowded than her usual areas. I'm not much into walking, but went with her and brought my ultralight. I seemed to catch numerous gills and bass every trip and at least one or two Crappie about every other trip. Not my new favorite fishing hole, but it's always fun to catch a few every now and then on a short trip only a couple miles from my house.

Better not let the dudes at Huntsville city hall know about any fishing or he will try and get it stop like he did the big excavation ponds down by the river at Ditto which they use for their personal fishing holes once n a blue moon...… they are full of gills and Crappie as we use to get to go there

As many on the forum know, I fished the Ditto pits for years after a city official said I couldn't receive official permission because of liability issues, but they weren't keeping law abiding anglers out. I'd even reported to Huntsville Police over the years on things like drunken, bonfire parties, suspected drug use under the bridge or to the Game Wardens on the guys filling buckets with everything they caught over 4 inches. Each trip I'd park under the bridge, put my kayak on my little two wheeled cart and walk it down the trail to the old borrow pits. Then one day the State Game Wardens checked my cooler and fishing license (I was good like always), then informed me the Huntsville City Attorney told them to charge anyone found in the area with criminal trespassing. You'd think having a retired Military Police Officer in the area, reporting on suspicious activity would be helpful. I even considered trying to contact the City Attorney or other Huntsville officials, but it didn't seem worth the headache. In a town full of millionaires and CEO of major companies, I realize I'm nothing. There's plenty of other low stress backwaters to fish without the aggravation. Just my 2 cents.

I used to work at ADTRAN. I know back then they'd only let people who worked there fish in the pond. There are security guards, but I don't know that they ever check anyone.

If its public (government) owned it seems to me if they let one fish they have to let all fish. Sick of these "private" resortd owned and paid by us but open to only a select few.
We've got several i n SC. Makes me sick to think about it.
